Injectable wrinkle relaxer treatments are one of the most popular anti-aging treatments among both men and women looking to refresh their appearances or prevent unwanted lines and wrinkles. The active ingredient in each of these injectable treatments is a type of botulinum toxin. This toxin limits or restricts the contractions of certain muscles used to make facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, squinting, etc., that cause dynamic wrinkles on the face. When these muscles contract less often or less forcefully, the dynamic wrinkles are able to smooth out quite quickly.

To determine if you are a good candidate for BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, or Jeuveau, it is always best to visit an experienced, licensed injector. Each injection type is slightly different and is designed for different areas of the face. However, they are all used to smooth out or even prevent dynamic lines and creases in the upper face. Dynamic lines are those caused by repetitive muscle contractions, as opposed to static lines, which are the result of reduced elasticity and volume in the skin. For static lines, a filler product is usually a better option. Wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers are both intended to help reduce the earlier signs of aging.

BOTOX and Dysport can be used to treat glabellar lines (the lines between the eyebrows), Crow's feet, and forehead lines, depending on the patient's specific concerns. 

XEOMIN and Jeuveau are primarily used to treat glabellar lines because their unique properties cause them to "feather," or spread beneath the skin more easily. This spreading makes them great choices for dynamic creases in less sensitive areas, but they are not recommended for delicate areas, such as Crow's feet. In addition, Xeomin does not contain any preservatives, which makes it a better option for some patients.

All of our injectable treatments are performed by Dr. Dipuma as outpatient procedures at Nordstar Medical, Skincare & Laser Center. Depending on timing, availability, and other factors, you may be able to receive your treatment on the same day as your initial consultation with Dr. Dipuma, or you may need to schedule your injections for a different day.

On the day of your treatment, you will be asked to make a few facial expressions using your upper face, like frowning, squinting, smiling, etc., so Dr. Dipuma can ensure the optimal placements for the injections. We will then properly cleanse your face, and Dr. Dipuma will use a very fine needle to administer your selected wrinkle relaxer. Once your injections are complete, we apply a cold compress to your treatment areas to help minimize bruising and discomfort. Wrinkle relaxer injections typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, then you can resume most of your usual routine with no required recovery period.

Whether you receive BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, or Jeuveau injections, you can immediately return to your daily routine. However, strenuous exercise should be skipped for a minimum of one day to help prevent early metabolization of the formula. You will need to sleep with your head elevated for at least one night and avoid touching your face, which can accidentally spread the treatment to other areas.

Your treatment areas may appear red, swollen, or bruised for a few days, but you will not have any lasting or serious side effects. Usually, these early side effects can be covered with makeup. Depending on the injection type you and Dr. Dipuma choose, your full results should be visible within about a week and last 3 – 4 months. During your appointment, we will also discuss how often you will need to schedule follow-up injections at Nordstar Medical, Skincare & Laser Center to maintain your results.
